Critters in the Trench

Critters in the trench
Instance man’s return
To the state of nature.
Strategists become
Heirs to Hercules
Ancient Romans prayed to.
Iron General:
Does, like any man,
He shield himself with jokes?
Frescoes betoken
Deep traits unspoken,
Awoken, unbroken.
Nature somersaults:
Tell me, where but here
Do eagles rescue deer?
“The older the cat,
The sharper the claws”
– Lithuanian saw.
Frontline cats unleashed
Are mighty beasts and
Potent bioweapons.
Looks like World War One,
But the parallels
To Tolkien don’t end there.
Plastered falsehoods peeled,
Old Taras revealed.
Emblematic moment.
Fields hold only ash.
Someday soon it will
Fertilize sunflowers.
