Leper

Leper! A stalking curse upon all eyes,
That used to be a human being,
Now walks for all to stare at and despise,
A sponge for loathing and worried seeing.
Strangers deride me, old friends just ignore,
The thing disintegrating in their sight,
I am now cast out under ancient law,
Dead to them, except as a tool of fright.
A healer, I had heard stories of him,
I trust not phoney, this my one last chance,
I beg of him, squeezing my one hope slim,
I feel an earthquake in his words and glance.
Clean completion, soul and body pure,
My death is over, God’s mercy is sure.
