Rediscovering the Humanities on Open With Erich Prince

VoegelinView editor Paul Krause joined Erich Prince, the editor of Merion West, on his podcast Open With Erich Prince to discuss VoegelinView, Eric Voegelin, the artistic and aesthetic life, as well as some personal stories about the love of hiking and adventure. The first 25 or so minutes of the podcast deal with the emergence of VoegelinView and Eric Voegelin’s life and philosophy (summary and exposition of his highlights on the dangers of technological domination and Gnostic political utopianism) before transitioning to the importance of the arts (which Voegelin also championed) in the 21st century. The subsequent conversation explored Aristotle’s ideas of disciplined liberty and short writing as a gateway to a reading and writing life, why the humanities keep us human are represent “the best which has been thought and said” about the human condition, a warning against the philosophy of scientific conquest in Francis Bacon and the so-called Enlightenment, where romanticism fits into the humanistic tradition of education, interspliced with reflections on the active life of hiking as an extension of the humanist and romantic ideal.

You can listen to the episode here, it runs roughly 1 hour and 45 minutes: https://www.callin.com/episode/paul-krause-rediscovering-the-humanities-anRJlbnJDb

The episode also included discussions of various luminaries including: Aristotle, Peter Viereck, Russell Kirk, Sir Roger Scruton, Saint Augustine, Matthew Arnold, and Joseph Epstein.

We have a relationship to republish materials from Merion West. We will also be welcoming Merion West contributors to our journal soon.
