“Rolling in the Deep” à la Voegelin
A young lady with a nice voice happened to take a class with Barry Cooper where she put a playful spin on a serious presentation on Eric Voegelin’s book, Science, Politics, and Gnosticism. She explored Voegelin’s ideas by changing the lyrics to a popular song, which, like so many aspects of our culture, has made its way to YouTube.”
Here are her lyrics:
Rolling in the Deep à la Voegelin
There’s an essay starting in my heart
Reaching my publisher, and it’s bringing me out the dark
Finally I can see you crystal clear
Go ‘head, ignore my work, and I’ll lay your books bare
See how I denounce every stage of you
Don’t underestimate the analysis I will do
There’s an essay starting in my heart
Reaching my publisher
And it’s bringing me out the dark
The steps of your goal remind me of God
They keep me thinking you’ve got answers to it all
The steps of your goal, I have to assess
I can’t help feeling
You’ve got answers to it all
Treating us like sheep
You have just lies inside of your head
And you play them like a cheat
Baby, I have no gnosis to be told
But I’ve heard one of yours
And I’m gonna make your books burn
Think of me when you solve earthly despair
Make a perfect world
As mine sure won’t compare
The steps of your goal remind me of God
They keep me thinking you’ve got answers to it all
The steps of your goal, I have to assess
I can’t help feeling
You’ve answers to it all
Treating us like sheep
You have just lies inside of your head
And you play them like a cheat
Answers to it all
Treating us like sheep
You have just lies inside of your head
But you played them, like a cheater
Throw your soul into every new order
Craft your golem to find what you look for
Turn all sorrow into treasured gold
You’ll find it still exists and defies what you told
You’ve answers to it all
Answers to it all
It all, it all, it all . . .
