Saul

Israel has one Lord – and me as its king,
An awkward enterprise, what am I for?
I did my best, I thought, fit tributes bring
In sacrifice, but no that’s not God’s law.
Slaughtering Philistines just like cattle,
Regaining Israel’s promised lands in might,
Defeating Amalek in fine battle,
Am I so worthless? Was old Samuel right?
I am no easy servant, that is sure,
And have a heavy master to obey,
My last struggle rages, death lies in store,
How hard upon David shall this crown weigh?
Slay me, my life is over, let it end
By an Israelite, no more wrath God send.
