is a faith in the fact of the body,
the fact to be entered and known

until body and impulse
are coherent for love,

and steadfast breathing a word
of permission, a word come to tell

of a sweetness that passes understanding,
made ours and kissable.

He is author of numerous books, most recently From Dickinson to Dylan: Visions of Transcendence in Modernist Literature (Missouri, 2020). He is also co-editor, with Charles R. Embry, of The Eric Voegelin Reader: Politics, History, Consciousness (Missouri, 2017).
