A Rich Man’s Lament

I did nothing, why are you blaming me
For that scabby beggar once sat outside
What happened to be my gate? Why me?
Burning while he stands on the other side.
Lazarus, is that your name? please assist
My good man. Abraham, please remember
Enough compassion slightly to resist
The fire-cloud trying me to dismember
Oh dear, can’t you warn my brothers in time?
If the law and the prophets are so strict
To make common callousness such a crime
Then Lazarus must not be derelict.
He can’t warn? Then woe for them when they’re dead
If this awaits those who do not share bread.
