Sermon of the Sparrows

Go sit on your porch. This place will teach you
Everything you need to seed and grow.
The sermons of sparrows will rise to greet you,
So listen to them to know and be known.
The language of flowers is at your feet:
Ajuga, cosmos, and forget-me-nots.
With nodding heads, they are waiting to meet
Your weary hands and your heavy cross.
Lay down your cross, just for a little while.
Stretch yourself out upon its beam and rest.
Among sparrows, flowers, the Gardener’s smile,
You have all you need to bless and be blessed.
Sit on your porch, and your porch will teach you,
And sermons of sparrows will rise to greet you.

Liv is an urban monk, a poet, a painter, a birder, and a student of Christian Spirituality. She has been engaged in creative writing more or less consistently for two decades and was slightly startled, though far from displeased, to discover that poetry is her medium. When she’s not writing, Liv practices gardening, pipe-smoking, leather-working, and mischief. She has been published in Loft Books, The Blue Daisies Journal, The Way Back To Ourselves, and Vessels of Light. Peeks into her work can be found on Instagram and Twitter.
