The Forest

We found a fallen path in failing light
Twilight deepening to a fragile night
And searching saw the ash, well grown
As wandered long amidst the ancient boughs
Surrounding us, an awe they still arouse
Though grey and old, their fallen lay alone.
Upon the dark and witless paths, were lost
And found at end of days as shadow crossed
Their limbs upon the earth in weary sleep
We looked upon, and fought the ancient fear
Surrounding us, a whisper still we hear
Though sure the King, the righteous law does keep
Along the dusty paths, the circling ways
With fruits and flesh we feasted many days
And fished the rivers thanks to gracious King
We could not see the forest for the trees
Surrounding us, with gentle moving breeze
And morning light, with birds that ever sing
Then vows of faith we made, on grounds so pure
And rightly sought the verder’s rights secure
Then living tended game and wooded grove
On merry lands did greenest pastures find
Surrounding us, a world possessing mind
The Forest, loving—toward which we strove.
