John O’Brien is a lecturer in Sociology and Criminology in University College Cork. He is from Dublin, with a Bachelor of Social Science and a Master of Social Science from University College Dublin, earning a PhD in University College Cork, and has teaches courses on social theory, sociology of deviance and criminology topics. His 2018 book States of Intoxication explores how alcohol use and regulation has been shaped by historical processes. His research specialisms is alcohol, crime and prison, and the intersection between the three.
