Vanished in Appalachia

The morning sky is still black and dark
As my eyes awake and look on high.
A chorus of birds begin to sing for me
As the first light of the sun my eyes begin to see.
Atop the rolling hills the morning fog fades
Revealing the beauty of the world for the day.
Step by step I climb, higher and higher to reach the sky.
The ancient mountains now speak to me
As my eyes gaze out upon the endless sea of trees.
Ah, Virginia, my adopted home so sweet
Your spirit guides my feet despite the summer heat.
And your beauty brings joyful tears to my eyes
Renewing my soul to continue the arduous climb.
Across the rolling hills and rocks
I spot in the distance that wild flock,
A dozen dappled ponies wild and free
Causing my heart to beat with glee.
My eyes now see, and my ears do hear
The dance of Love with its song drawing near.
A gentle wind begins to whisper into my ears:
Stay awhile if you please and let go of your fears.
Now the flowers begin to rise
As my soul ponders Nature’s signs
Inviting me to join the sacred dance
And become one with Life’s cosmic romance.
With sun at its height chasing away all my frights,
My heart and soul begin to take flight
As I my feet step faster and faster
Beside another soul as we chat with laughter
Learning about how we came to be
In the same place singing in that heavenly key.
Though the two of us now depart,
For a brief moment we had become one heart
Treading through these ancient hills divine
So that our souls would no longer be blind.
At the top of the mountain I can now see so far
And the beauty before my eyes heals me of my many scars.
Now my weary legs are beginning to walk slow
While my heart cries out: Stay, do not go!
